Beskuitfontein Farming

Carlton Heights Guesthouse is located on Beskuitfontein farm – a working sheep farm. The Erasmus family have farmed on Beskuitfontein for three generations. Stefan Erasmus farmed with his father for several years, after which formally taking over all operations in 2014. Both Stefan and his dad, Pieter, have a deep love and appreciation for the Karoo with all its challenges and complexities. They have both been honoured with Eastern Cape Farmer of the Year awards and constantly strive to improve the farm and the practices they follow. Together the Erasmus family are committed to the sustainable use and improvement/restoration of Karoo veld, with new technologies and research continually being implemented. Beskuitfontein’s core business is rearing Merino sheep and Bonsmara cattle.

Every animal on Beskuitfontein is fully traceable – from date of birth, weight and growth history, genetics and medicine records. Beskuitfontein is also certified with the Responsible Wool Standard and Cape Wools Standard.

One of the more unique aspects of Beskuitfontein’s farming approach is its elevated indoor lambing facility known as the “maternity ward” on the farm. This facility enables Beskuitfontein’s motto to “MAKE EVERY LAMB COUNT” by implementing a precision farming and intensive lambing system (High Input Sustainable Agriculture model).

Beskuitfontein have been following sustainable farming practices for decades – with a focus on grazing management practices aimed at conserving, restoring and regenerating the Karoo to a more functional and productive state. On the farm’s trails various of Beskuitfontein’s water management- and erosion control projects are on display – showing how effective such interventions can be in restoring severe erosion dongas and gullies.
